Good question! Unfortunately, the term remy or remi has become severely misused within the hair extension industry. To answer the question, we need to understand the difference between remy hair and non-remy hair.
Remy Hair
The true meaning of remy hair is human hair that is collected from one source or donor and the cuticles are fully intact and aligned in one direction. True remy hair is cut and collected in a method in which ensures all the hair strands stay aligned in the natural direction which it grew. This maintains the natural texture patterns and cuticle direction; hence it is durable and tangle free. Whilst others claim it, there are very few hair extension suppliers that can provide genuine custom remy extensions in Melbourne and Australia wide.
Non-Remy Hair
Non-Remy hair is collected from various sources such as floor hair from salons, temples and random suppliers. With this uncontrolled method of collection, cuticle directions become mixed, causing inevitable tangling and matting problems. To provide a solution to the problems that arise with non-remy hair, the hair will go through a process to completely remove the entire cuticle (acid bath).
After the cuticles are removed, the hair is coated in silicone to make it shine and look silky. The hair initially feels smooth and soft, however, after few washes the silicone coating wears off and the hair becomes brittle and tangles. In addition, as the cuticle layer has been removed the hair is less durable and will not tolerate heat and coloring processes the same as true Remy. As mentioned above, many suppliers sell non-remy as remy or inter mix remy with non-remy for extra profit.
